House, For Once Listening To Trump, Passes Coronavirus Relief Bill

(Tea Party PAC) – Early Saturday, the House passed a coronavirus response package in a 363-40 vote.

The bill was negotiated by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin to provide relief for workers and families affected by coronavirus response efforts.

The plan was supported by all House Democrats, while opposed by 40 Republicans.

Rep. Justin Amash, who famously left the Republican party last year, voted “present.”

Before the vote, which occurred just before 1 a.m. on Saturday, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) spoke with reporters about the deal that had been reached, saying that “some things needed to be cleaned up.”

On Friday night, President Trump declared that he supported the bill in what may have been an effort to ease the concerns of skeptical House Republicans, who were mostly displeased at not seeing the full text of the bill.

“I fully support H.R. 6201: Families First CoronaVirus Response Act, which will be voted on in the House this evening,” the president tweeted. “This Bill will follow my direction for free CoronaVirus tests, and paid sick leave for our impacted American workers …”

“I encourage all Republicans and Democrats to come together and VOTE YES!” Trump later added. “I will always put the health and well-being of Americans FIRST. Look forward to signing the final bill, ASAP!”

Around 6 p.m. on Friday, Pelosi initially informed colleagues of the deal with the Trump administration.

“We are proud to have reached an agreement with the administration to resolve outstanding challenges, and now will soon pass the Families First Coronavirus Response Act,” she wrote in a letter.

Later, Fox News reported that Mnuchin had not yet agreed to the bill.

Just before 8 p.m. Mnuchin told “Lou Dobbs Tonight” that:

“We have an agreement that reflects what the president talked about in his speech the other [Wednesday] night. He’s very focused on making sure that we can deal with the coronavirus, that people who have to be home quarantined — that hard-working Americans don’t lose their compensation because they have to be home quarantined.

“Obviously we expect the bigger corporations to pick up these costs,” Mnuchin added, “and we also want to make sure that people can get free testing. The president wants lots of testing. One of the things the market responded very positively to was [that] the president has made just enormous progress with all these big companies coming in and saying that there’s testing.”

Just before 10 p.m., Pelosi informed the Democratic caucus that the “process has taken some time,” adding that “language incorporating the last details into the text is currently being written and should be completed soon.”

According to sources that spoke with Fox News, the Senate plans to take up the bill next week.

Sources told Fox that if the measure passed the House with an overwhelming majority, the Senate would take it up next week.

Fox News has more about what the bill includes:

“This legislation is about testing, testing, testing,” Pelosi said. “To stop the spread of the virus, we have secured free coronavirus testing for everyone who needs a test, including the uninsured. We cannot fight coronavirus effectively unless everyone in our country who needs to be tested can get their test free of charge.”

According to Pelosi, the bill includes paid emergency leave with two weeks of paid sick leave and up to three months of paid family and medical leave. “We have also secured enhanced unemployment insurance, a step that will extend protections to furloughed workers,” she said.

Pelosi also said the bill will include nutrition security initiatives “including SNAP, student meals, seniors’ nutrition and food banks.” The Democrat said “22 million children rely on free or reduced-price school meals for their food security; we must ensure that they have food to eat.”

She also said the bill will include increased federal funds for Medicaid to support local, state, tribal and territorial governments and health systems “so that they have the resources necessary to combat this crisis.”

  1. I take the President at his word. He said the coronavirus was a hoax. So why is he going to sign this expensive bill? Why spend money on a hoax?

    • You win the SNARKY prize of the day Irwin. Only problem: you listen to fake news. POTUS never said coronavirus is a hoax. He was quoting someone else who came to him and said THEY believed it was another of the Dem’s hoaxes. Obviously you have not done your homework, Irwin. Go to your room and don’t come out until you study the lessons. No treats for you for until you stop spreading lies.

  2. And so what happened to all the democrats pork?? Am I to believe that Pelosi sent the President a clean bill? Doubt it!

  3. Mnuchin probably told Nasty to get her fluff and wish-list crap out of the bill. The DEMs love to load up “got to have legislation” with their bull$hit pork to “save the world”. This is a temp act to get through THIS crises.

  4. It is good to see that both the Republicans and Democrats are working together for the good of the nation. But those 40 Republicans who opposed the bill, shame on you.

  5. I LOVE the Republican spin ! This plan was initiated by Democrats, bypassing Trump, (simply because he couldn’t be counted on to do anything constructive), dealing with Mnuchin instead. The deal was COMPLETED, at which point Trump announces, “he has been working with Democrats to help them move forward”…..uhh, really….HE? NOT!! This bill gets passed IN SPITE of Trump!!, not due to him.

    • Kenny: How much did you think Obama wrote of the ACA that bears his name-Obamacare??? He only praised it wrong-“like your doctor, keep your doctor, like your plan….. ” Presidents don’t write legislation, only take credit for it because they direct it. HRC and your boy Obozo took credit for shooting bin Laden, but neither one probably knows how to fire a gun. Kenny, you’re playing fast and loose like the other pin-head liberals.
