(PCC)The Trump Revolution is revolutionizing our Republic by slashing the fat from the federal government, and the IRS is not exempt! On Thursday, thousands of layoffs begin at the IRS as auditors prepare to leave and join the unemployment lines!
The IRS is going under the DOGE microscope soon and possibly in the Trump trash compactor if it is shown that they are inefficient, wasteful, and antiquated.
Starting on Thursday, the IRS plans to initiate the first wave of layoffs, affecting at least 6,000 employees, as part of a budget reduction initiative that will result in significant job cuts across the federal government.
Though it comes in the thick of tax-filing season, managers across the tax agency have been alerted to cuts targeting newer audit agent hires. That means auditors who have been in their jobs for less than one year or, in some cases, two years, depending on their position.
The agency is also wary of reducing taxpayer-service personnel as millions of Americans started filing their taxes last month and will continue to do so through April 15. It’s unclear the size and scope of additional waves of layoffs.
It appears the cuts are mainly in the Small Business/Self-Employed Division, thus bringing down the auditor count to a bare minimum.
A union official stated in an IRS employee video that the agency’s Kansas City facility will let go of an indeterminate number of auditors.
“We received notification today that employees in SB/SE who are on probation are scheduled for termination,” said Shannon Ellis, referring to the agency’s Small Business/Self Employed Division.
In another video message, Ellis said, “Our probationary employees will be removed as of tomorrow—we don’t know what time, we don’t know how it’s going to happen, we don’t even know if it includes all of our probationary employees.
“We don’t know for sure if it is going to impact other than probationary employees,” said Ellis, president of the National Treasury Employees Union, Chapter 66.
A Treasury Department spokesperson was strangely silent about the layoff and reorganization matter. The layoffs are part of a broader Trump administration initiative to shrink the overall federal workforce by shedding newer hires across agencies, who enjoy fewer workplace protections than more senior workers.
The IRS is especially vulnerable to the cuts—driven by the so-called Department of Government Efficiency—because it has been on a hiring binge in recent years as part of a sweeping effort to improve audit services for the agency.
Many on Capitol Hill have known for years that taxpayer dollars were being spent like a drunken sailor on shore leave for decades, thus ballooning budgets and burdening the taxpayer with fixed government overhead. The IRS was not exempt from such spending orgies.
After receiving $80 billion in special one-time funding from Congress in 2022, the agency initially focused on beefing up its audit functions before more recently shifting to emphasize improving enforcement. Between 2021 and 2024, the workforce increased by one quarter, to more than 100,000, some of whom have been trained in the use of firearms for work-related enforcement.
Rumors in Washington suggest a complete dismantling of the IRS and its replacement with a fair tax system. That system functions as a consumption tax, akin to a super sales tax, which a computerized collection system can effortlessly oversee.
Final Word: If the IRS is downsized or replaced with a Fair Tax style system, then not only will America have a chance to recover from vast federal wasteful spending, but the American people may have a chance to recover as well.
