The federal government, especially under President Abraham Lincoln, sought to limit states’ authority, which included the spread of slavery, which Southern states saw as a threat to their autonomy and way of life.
The result was a bloody war and full secession as 11 Southern states seceded from the Union, forming the Confederate States of America, in direct defiance of federal authority.
Today, while slavery is no longer an issue, the same Democrat defiance is still at play. “The GAO is part of the Deep State defiance trying to stop the will of 77 million Americans who voted for President Trump,” Greene said in a recent statement. “They are no different than far-left extremism in the judiciary that is trying to stop legal deportations.

Beyond the agency itself, Greene and other conservatives see a broader pattern: state and local Democrats, particularly in progressive strongholds like California, New York, and Illinois, have implemented policies that directly defy federal authority. From sanctuary city laws that prevent cooperation with ICE to refusal to enforce voter ID rules, Republican leaders argue this defiance comes at a steep cost to public safety.
“This is about more than bureaucrats or one agency,” Greene said. “These are the people who actively destroyed America for the last 4 years and used Biden as a puppet to harness the power of the government for their own insane political goals.”
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a Trump-era initiative aimed at slashing bureaucratic bloat, has been largely sidelined by Democratic lawmakers and state officials, who argue it threatens regulatory protections and community autonomy. But supporters like Greene say DOGE is necessary to rein in unaccountable agencies like the GAO.
Underlying these debates is a deeper constitutional clash over states’ rights versus federal authority. For many Republicans, the current dynamic represents a dangerous precedent: unelected officials and local political leaders ignoring the law when it doesn’t serve their agenda, even if it means risking public safety in the process.
“If Democrats want to run their states like rogue nations, then they shouldn’t be surprised when people start demanding federal accountability,” said one senior GOP aide.
