The proposed legislation labels these committees labeled as militias and advocates for their prohibition. It focuses on activities involve intimidating state and local officials, interfering with government proceedings, impersonating law enforcement, and violating people’s constitutional rights while armed and operating as part of a private paramilitary organization.
But wait, doesn’t the Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights is cited as a constitutional protection for militias, as it guarantees the right of the people to keep and bear arms.
Some argue Democrats are displaying a blatant disregard for the U.S. Constitution, but in sharp backlash the response is they are only trying to protect the helpless family who will fall victims to the bloody rage of the White Supremacists.
Senator Markey, in support of the legislation, cited the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol by individuals with white supremacist affiliations and ties to paramilitary groups. He highlighted the concern regarding private paramilitary actors such as the “Proud Boys” and “Oath Keepers” and their potential impact on democracy and the rule of law.
